SCAVENGERS

Most of us don't
hunt for prey any more

We sit in the
coliseum of civilisation
eagerly awaiting
the tearing apart
of the gladiator
celebrating not his heroism
but our own covert sadism

we sympathise
with the victims of
our systems
enjoying our place
in the unending
chain of
opressor/opressed

they say we were
primates once
I doubt
we could even have been
scavengers.
